There's nobody better in the Country to get you kickin' up your heels than swing stars Dave "Pappy" Stuckey and Hal "Junior" Smith.  For Redwood Coast in 2019 they've teamed up once again to lead a hand-picked lineup of Western Swing and Jazz All Stars.  Featuring Western Swing Hall of Fame fiddler and vocalist Elana James and joined by Dan Walton (Asleep At the Wheel, Willie Nelson), James Mason (Bob Wills national fiddle champion), Russ Blake (Lucky Stars, Portland Playboys), Jonathan Doyle (Asleep At the Wheel, Willie Nelson), they're bringing the heat for a one-of-a-kind Western Swing show. The fiddles whine, the beat bounces, and the stars shine.  Take a peek at this line-up!

 

DAVE STUCKEY - band leader, producer, singer, songwriter, drummer and swingin' guitarist extraordinaire. He helped the rebirth of the american hillbilly -rockabilly scene with the Dave & Deke Combo, produced The Hot Club Of Cowtown «Tall Tales» album, plays drums with The Lucky Stars AND leads the Hoot Owls.

SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST - Elana James - Fiddle, vocals.  James is a founding member, along with Whit Smith, of the hot jazz and Western swing trio Hot Club of Cowtown.  

 

In addition to tours and recording with Bob Dylan, James has also recorded with Willie Nelson, Ray Price, Merle Haggard and others, and has written, produced and arranged, along with band mate Whit Smith, nine studio albums with the Hot Club of Cowtown. In 2004 she was inducted, with her Hot Club band mates, into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame.

 

In 2015 James was named Western Swing Female of the Year at the Ameripolitan Music Awards, held in Austin, Texas, and Hot Club of Cowtown was awarded Western Swing Group of the Year.

DAN WALTON piano, vocals.  While based in Austin Texas, Dan worked extensively in western swing and has recorded/performed with Dale Watson, Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green, Johnny Bush, Paul Shaffer, Buddy Miller, Vince Gill, The Time Jumpers, George Strait, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Garrison Keillor, Leon Rausch and Elvin Bishop to name a few.

JAMES MASON fiddle.  Bob Wills National Fiddle Champion James Mason entered his first fiddle contest at age 11.  Inspired by Bob Wills, Stephane Grappelli, and Joe Venuti, James has played and recorded Bluegrass, Country, Swing and Jazz.  He currently resides in Portland, OR and is active with Pete Krebs' Portland Playboys, The Barn Door Slammers as well as two Gypsy jazz bands, Swing Papillon and Everything’s Jake.

MARC CAPARONE trumpet.  A specialist in the jazz trumpet styles of the 1920s and 30s and Western Swing.  He has recorded with Hal Smith’s Rhythmakers, Narvin Kimball’s All Stars, Carl Sonny Leyland, Clint Baker’s New Orleans Jazz Band and the New El Dorado Jazz Band.   Marc currently plays trumpet with the Holland Coots Quintet, High Sierra Jazz Band and Carl Sonny Leyland’s House Party. His goal is to carry on the traditions of the great early jazz trumpet players.

WALLY HERSOM bass.  Highly prized Los Angeles based Bass fiddleman known to many as an original member of Big Sandy's Fly Rite Boys.  Wally can be found with LA's best and has since joined up with The Lucky Stars, Dave Stuckey's Hoot Owls and can also be heard performing with Carl Sonny Leyland, Jonathan Stout and others.   His well-honed style and expertise have made him a popular favorite.

JONATHAN DOYLE clarinet.  Mr. Doyle moved to Austin to pursue his love of acoustic and roots music afresh. After a brief stint with the Asylum Street Spankers, he went on to freelance in Central Texas’ vibrant traditional jazz, swing, and western swing scene, playing with well-established acts such as Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel, and the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, as well being a part of many fine local bands such as Thrift Set Orchestra, Albanie & her Fellas, Stan Smith and the Jazz Pharaohs, Aunt Ruby's Sweet Jazz Babies, East Side Dandies, White Ghost Shivers, Whit Smith's Hot Jazz Caravan, The Giant Three and his own projects The Jonathan Doyle Quintet / Swingtet.

JAMEY CUMMINS guitarist, vocalist.  Jamey Cummins is an active musician in the Austin area. He specializes in Western Swing, vintage jazz as well as pursuing a wide variety of genres. With over 20 years playing experience Jamey has performed with such Western Swing notables as Floyd Domino and Jason Roberts.   He first appeared at Redwood Coast two years ago with Jason Roberts and Dave Bennett and has been a regular here ever since.

HAL SMITH - band leader, drums. Hal became a full-time professional musician in 1978.  He has played Western Swing with legends Jason Roberts, Floyd Domino and Billy Mata.  Hal has also played with many of the best Traditional Jazz and Swing bands in the world, including the Dukes of Dixieland, Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band, Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band, Yerba Buena Stompers and many others.
