James Zeller Quartet
Redwood Coast Music Festival 2020 Performing Artist
James Zeller comes from a musical family, his Mom an excellent organist and pianist, his sister an excellent violinist who holds a classical piano degree, and his father playing too many instruments you to name, moderately well. Small wonder, James found his way onto the bandstand as a teenager, working professionally in his hometown of Eugene Oregon before moving to New York City at 18.
In his 17 years in NYC, he performed with jazz legends including Wynton Marsalis, Slide Hampton, The Jimmy Heath Orchestra (with Roy Hargrove and James Moody among many), and The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He was a regular member of The Billy Kaye Quintet (Drummer Billy Kaye of Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" album fame, and one of Thelonious Monk's last drummers), and was musical director for Don Hahn's quintet and sextet.
Over the last decade he turned his focus to bandleading, and added to singing to his bag of tricks. His trio has captivated hundreds of audiences in famed venues including The Rainbow Room, The Waldorf Astoria, and Lincoln Center. They were the house band every Friday at "Bar Pleiades" for 5 years before Zeller's departure back to the west coast.
When asked why he left such a successful scene, James shrugs and says simply "West is best." Since his move to California in 2017, his new band continues to delight audiences up and down the coast, and plans to do so for a long time.
