While living in Los Angeles and New York City, Chris has performed as the leader of a trio and quartet, solo pianist and sideman at many respected venues, including The Jazz Bakery, Soka Performing Arts Center, Birdland, Jazz at The Merc, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Vibrato Jazz Grill, and Steamers Cafe.
During the fall of 1987, Chris won a national music competition, the “Arts Recognition and Talent Search,” which resulted in a scholarship to the University of Southern California. While at USC, Chris was able to study with renowned pianists Cedar Walton, Jimmy Rowles and Alan Broadbent, as well as arranging and composition with bassist John Clayton.
In addition to performing with vocalists Tierney Sutton, Patti Austin, and Nancy Wilson, Chris has also collaborated in duo piano settings with renowned stride pianist Dick Hyman. Dawson has recorded for Warner Brothers, Verve, Arbors Records and Jazzology Records on projects that feature singers Renee Olestead, Rebecca Kilgore, Marty Grosz and legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden.
Chris has also collaborated with such notable musicians as Brian Bromberg, Frank Capp, Ron Eschete, David Foster, Joe LaBarbera, Lorraine Feather, Grant Stewart, Jack Sheldon and Bob Sheppard.
